SHOGUN

Title Sequence concept design exploration work created for Shogun | FX

Pulling inspiration from key thematic elements, I arrived at a concept based around the idea of starting on simple ink –– swirling and abstracted. The viewer is unsure, is this blood? Is this ink? Then we see a traditional Japanese calligrapher using the ink to paint our scene, as we are transported into a surrealized representation of feudal Japan. Ink is used throughout to represent fire, blood, and smoke. Dense fog and muted colors add mystery and intrigue as we travel from scene to scene, finally revealing the Shogun? His foe? It is left unanswered and open-ended as we close on the title card.

This is a personal/conceptual project –– created as a means to refine my concept & design process as it relates to title sequences.
